Loreta Janeta Velazquez
Born: June 26 1842 - Havana, Cuba
According to her story, she was born in Havana, Cuba in 1842 and the age of l3 married a U. S. Army officer. After war broke out, her husband left to fight for the Confederacy. Velazquez immediately had two Confederate-style uniforms made and began calling herself Lieutenant Harry T. Buford Shortly thereafter he died accidentally In June, 1861. Dressed as Lt. Harry T. Buford, she made her way to Virginia where she took part in the battle of First Manassas.
Note: Velazquez served the Confederacy as a soldier and spy throughout the war.
