Isabella Baumfree (Sojourner Truth)
Born: 1797? - Ulster County, New York
Died: November 26 1883 - Battle Creek, Michigan
She suffered hardships under slavery, but she had a deep, unwavering Christian faith that carried her through these trials for her entire life. In 1827, New York law emancipated all slaves, but Isabella had already left her husband and run away with her youngest child. After the Civil War ended, she worked tirelessly to aid the newly-freed southern slaves.
Note: In 1843, she took the name Sojourner Truth, believing this to be on the instructions of the Holy Spirit.
